Student of the Month: Andi Afuera

ASIS SoM AndiAndi is ASIS’s September Student of the Month because of they are motivated, direct, and communicate clearly and responsibly, plus always seeks to bring forth their best self. Andi also shows up with one hundred percent presence, shows integrity and leadership, and displays consistent professionalism and a good attitude.

Name one person who has had an impact on your life and explain why:
Most recently, Jeanine Jenkins, my Swedish teacher, has had a huge impact on my life. She inspires me to show up with presence each day and has helped me to realize that it’s never too far of a reach to find my kindest self.

How did you become interested in becoming a massage therapist?
I was massaging my own injured arm one evening while I was working in the Santa Catalina Mountains. The thought of becoming a massage therapist popped into my mind and I had a moment where, in a single instant, a whole future flashed before me. At that point I knew I had to trust my intuition and pursue massage therapy.

What led you to choose ASIS as your massage therapy school?
I knew ASIS would be a good fit when my best friend at the time would return home from her evening classes at ASIS with amazing new knowledge about things like Eastern medicine and the power of energy work.

What is your favorite thing about school and why?
My favorite thing about school has been, with my cohort, co-creating a safe yet fertile environment that encourages growth and expansion while inspiring me to rise up and bring it! Everyday!

Name one thing you cannot live without:
Some things I cannot live without are: morning dog walks, real talk, and alone time.

Name one country you would love to visit:
Lately, my fantasy vacation has been traveling to the international space station to float around closer to the Moon. I’ve been needing a lot of “space” in my life lately.

Are you a dog or cat person? Or both or neither?
Despite having a feline disposition, I am a devout dog owner/lover!

State three adjectives that describe you:
Reflective, enduring, human.

What is your go-to song when you need to get motivated?
The song “Ami O” by Lionel Loueke always motivates me to smile, open my heart, and sing at the top of my lungs, while “Don’t Take it Personal (Just One of Dem Days)” by Monica, reminds me to give myself permission to be unapologetically confused or feel “off.”

What are your plans after graduating from massage therapy school?
Once I complete massage school, I hope to pair with an employer who will support me in my ambition to further develop my knowledge, skills, and intuition in the realm of the healing arts.
