Foundation in Manual Therapy: Voice and Swallowing Disorders Flagstaff- April 2025

The Foundations in Manual Therapy: Voice and Swallowing Disorders seminar teaches
a slow, sustained form of dry, non-manipulative manual therapy for disorders involving
the face, mouth, neck, and upper body. Though presented from the context of the speech
pathologist and their unique patient needs, massage and other therapeutic communities
greatly benefit from the course content. Disorders addressed include TMJ disorder,
post-radiation/surgical, and general conditions relating to voice, swallowing, chewing,
articulation, breathing, movement, and tongue-related posture. This two-day, 16-hour
class challenges therapists to stretch beyond their original training and experience by
inserting a shared decision-making model (SDM). Rather than relying solely on clinical
expertise, SDM allows for an equal balancing of power with the patient. The course
combines lectures, demonstrations, and closely supervised one-on-one lab experiences.
The course includes a prerequisite 2-hour online introductory module.
Walt Fritz, PT, teaches his work internationally, with support from his book, “Manual
therapy in voice and swallowing: A person-centered approach,” available on Amazon.
He is a contributing author for the upcoming book, “Oxford Handbook of Voice
Pedagogy” and the third edition of “The Vocal Athlete.” You can read his approach to
manual therapy through his recently published paper, The mechanism of action for
laryngeal manual therapies: the need for an update (Fritz W. (2024). The mechanism of

otolaryngology & head and neck surgery, 32(3), 151–155).

    Presented by the Academy of Lymphatic Studies- This 135-hour course certifies therapists in the four components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which include Manual Lymph Drainage, Compression/Bandaging, Skin Care and Exercises. Participants first complete 45 hours of Home Study online, prior to attending the 90-hour live hands-on classroom time.
