Introduction to Hospital Based Massage Therapy

Having the comfort of compassionate, supportive treament in situation and in harmony with the Hospital protocols is essential.  Join Rose Adams and Alisha Witcomb for this empowering concentration of studies. This introductory course to hospital based massage therapy will create an awareness of the rewards and challenges of working in the healthcare environment. A study of hospital protocols, contraindications, hands-on role playing of many diverse medical situations a massage therapist could encounter while working on hospital inpatients.

Massage Therapy in the hospital environment demands unique skills and knowledge for the therapist today. Team teaching this course will be Rose Adams, MHA, BSW, LMT and Alisha Witcomb, LMT, NCTMB, with a combined experience of over 15 years working at Flagstaff Medical Center’s Massage Therapy program. Topics covered will include effective communication skills, what to expect when working in a medical environment; hospital protocols, importance of mindful awareness and compassionate touch. Different hospital based   scenarios will be  discussed. Knowledge of a diverse patient population will be examined with ample time for question and answer. Including a look at recent research supporting Hospital Based Massage Therapy.

Rose Adams‘ early massage study was with the Pacific School of Massage and Healing Arts and is currently a teacher at the ASIS Flagstaff school. For nearly 30 years, Rose’s work with massage therapy has included private practice, collaboration with community healthcare providers, and most recently providing therapeutic massage to many people with compromised health while doing hospital based massage therapy at Flagstaff Medical Center for nine years. Alisha Witcomb, LMT, NCTMB is a graduate of ASIS in 2005, and has spent 7 years doing hospital based massage therapy. Ms Witcomb currently has a private practice in Flagstaff, AZ.
